By: Aziz Khatri

KARACHI: Sindh’s Law Minister, Ziaul Haq Lanjhar, has announced strict new penalties for traffic violations, including a fine of 200,000 rupees for government vehicles caught breaking one-way traffic rules. This announcement was made during a meeting to discuss amendments to the Motor Vehicle Rules, which included senior officials such as the Sindh Inspector General of Police and secretaries from the law and transport departments.

Among the key decisions, fitness certification will now be mandatory for all vehicles, both commercial and non-commercial. The government has also approved a complete ban on four-seater rickshaws, and vehicle inspections will be conducted by independent third-party agencies.
Lanjhar outlined additional fines: motorcyclists riding in the wrong direction will face a penalty of 25,000 rupees, and riding without a license will incur the same fine. Car drivers caught without a license will be fined 50,000 rupees, while four-wheelers violating one-way traffic rules will face fines of up to 100,000 rupees.

Rickshaws will require official permission to operate, and goods vehicles must have at least five cameras installed to enhance monitoring. Additionally, water tankers and dump trucks will be equipped with trackers and sensors to improve accountability.
