Japanese Design and Tradition on Display at State Bank Museum

By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi is hosting the Japanese Calendar Exhibition 2026 at the State Bank Museum and Art Gallery Karachi from April 7 to 8, 2026. The exhibition is open to the public free of charge from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The exhibition features around 80 Japanese calendars provided by the Japan Calendar Publishers Cooperative Union, highlighting a wide range of themes including natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and contemporary design. These calendars go beyond their practical function, reflecting Japan’s deep appreciation for time, seasonal changes, and harmony with nature.

Visitors are offered a unique insight into how calendars serve as a form of visual storytelling, combining artistic expression with functionality. The exhibition emphasizes the balance in Japanese design between simplicity, intricate detail, and purpose.

A special attraction of the exhibition is the display of traditional Hina Dolls (Hina-ningyo), presented to commemorate Hinamatsuri, a cultural festival celebrated annually in Japan to pray for the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls.

By organizing this exhibition in collaboration with the State Bank Museum and Art Gallery, the Consulate-General of Japan aims to strengthen cultural ties and promote mutual understanding between Japan and Pakistan through an engaging and accessible cultural experience.
