Govt Launches ‘Apna Meter, Apni Reading’ App to Empower Consumers

By: Aziz Khatri

In a significant move to enhance transparency in electricity billing, the federal government has introduced a new mobile application named “Apna Meter, Apni Reading.” Launched on Sunday, the app aims to empower consumers by allowing them greater control over their monthly meter readings.

The innovative application enables users to upload a photo of their meter reading on a designated date, which will then be utilized to generate their electricity bill. This initiative addresses long-standing issues such as overbilling, delayed or inaccurate meter readings, and a general lack of transparency in the billing process.

One of the key features of the app is that consumers who submit their own meter readings will have their readings take precedence over later readings submitted by the electricity company for that billing cycle. This is particularly advantageous for subsidized consumers, as it helps them maintain their eligibility and avoid steep bill spikes due to minor discrepancies. For instance, surpassing the 200-unit usage threshold by just one unit can raise a consumer's bill from PKR 2,330 to over PKR 8,000, making accuracy crucial.
With this initiative, the government aims not only to streamline the billing process but also to restore consumer trust in the electricity management system.
