Karachi: The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi hosted an Official Development Assistance (ODA) Press Tour aimed at raising awareness about Japan's contribution to Pakistan’s development. Journalists from various media outlets participated in the tour, which showcased key assistance projects in vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and human security.
Accompanied by consulate staff, the journalists visited two significant project sites in Karachi that have benefited from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) and JICA’s Technical Cooperation. Since its inception in 1989, the GGP has funded over 400 projects across Pakistan, focusing on enhancing social well-being at the grassroots level.
The first stop on the tour was the Disabled Welfare Association (DWA), situated near Mazar-e-Quaid. Established in 2003, the DWA provides vocational training to women with disabilities, particularly from underprivileged backgrounds. During the visit, it was highlighted that Japan’s recent support through the GGP has facilitated the provision of new transport vehicles and vocational training equipment, enhancing opportunities for low-income women with disabilities in Karachi. A handover ceremony was also held on-site, graced by the presence of the Consul General of Japan, HATTORI Masaru.
The second site visited was the Women Skill Development Center, managed by the Women Development Foundation Pakistan (WDFP) in Maripur, Karachi. This center is a crucial component of JICA’s Technical Cooperation Project aimed at improving the livelihoods and welfare of Female Home-Based Workers (FHBWs) in the informal economic sector. The initiative seeks to uplift low-income domestic workers in Sindh Province by providing support and resources to help them enhance their livelihoods and ensure equitable economic growth. The visiting journalists were able to observe a Light-F training course designed to augment livelihood skills for these women.
At both sites, the journalists witnessed firsthand the positive impacts of these projects on the lives of Karachi’s residents, gaining valuable insights into Japan’s commitment to fostering development in Pakistan. The initiative underscores the enduring partnership between Japan and Pakistan, facilitating many women in achieving greater economic independence and well-being.
