Karachi: In a groundbreaking move, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has approved a budget of Rs. 55.28 billion for the fiscal year 2025-26 during a session marked by unprecedented open debate among council members. Chaired by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the meeting saw active participation from Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi.
For the first time in its history, the KMC allowed all council members to engage in the budget discussion and present their proposals before the approval. Mayor Wahab hailed this democratic approach and stated that the new budget is a commitment to the development and progress of Karachi, emphasizing that projects will be executed across all union committees without bias. He reassured residents that all promises made will be fulfilled.
"The new allocations for developmental works reflect our commitment to treat all areas of Karachi equally," Mayor Wahab remarked. He underscored that every city council member deserves respect and their rights will be safeguarded throughout the fiscal year.
Political leaders from various parties contributed positively to the budget discussion. The mayor welcomed their suggestions, expressing his hope that they would be utilized in the city’s development plans.
Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi praised the budget's respectful presentation, applauding the inclusion of all council members in the discussions. He highlighted ongoing works in 246 union committees, asserting that 71% of the projects are nearing completion. Waqasi challenged accusations of corruption, urging opponents to collaborate on solutions rather than just criticism. He clarified that the Rs. 3 billion earmarked for the K-IV water project was sourced from the federal government.
Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate reiterated the importance of fair and equitable development across Karachi, while Council Member Najmi Alam emphasized the equal distribution of CLIP funds to various towns. He raised concerns about clogged drains and the necessity for each union council to regulate plastic bag usage, advocating for the harvesting of rainwater to combat Karachi's vulnerability to earthquakes.
As the budget session concluded, other members, including UC Chairpersons Nauman Ilyas and Mustafa Afridi, also shared their insights. The City Council meeting was subsequently adjourned for an indefinite period, marking the end of a significant chapter in Karachi's governance.
