Karachi Medical Tourism Conference Ushers in a New Era

By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: Pakistan took a bold leap into the future of healthcare as the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD), alongside FPCCI and Al Baraka Bank, hosted Karachi’s groundbreaking “Tea for Tourism – Medical Tourism Conference” at the ICCD Headquarters. This all-day event, themed Serving Global Patients with Paramount Quality Services, brought together the nation’s medical minds, policy architects, industry heavyweights, and tourism strategists—each one laser-focused on making Pakistan a regional force in sustainable, patient-first medical tourism.

The day started with an energetic opening session: top government leaders, banking giants, and tourism visionaries energized the packed hall with calls for unity across industries to unlock the booming medical tourism market. Welcoming guests, ICCD’s Khawaja Ashraf Hussain flagged the summit as a direct follow-up to ICCD’s international Mega Forum on Sustainable Tourism, reaffirming the Chamber’s targeted push in Agriculture, Tourism, and Digital Economy—and ambitions to turn “Tea for Tourism” into an OIC-wide think tank for smart, sustainable travel.

Keynote speaker H.E. Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, Senior Vice President of FPCCI, hit home the message that Pakistan’s doctors are world-class, ready to drive a medical tourism boom and tap into global models from Turkiye, India, Iran, and China. Al Baraka Bank Pakistan’s President and CEO, Muhammad Atif Hanif, reaffirmed the bank’s readiness to fund innovative, halal, and ethical medical ventures. Parliamentary Secretary Ms. Saima Agha spotlighted Pakistan’s robust healthcare infrastructure—such as e-visas for 191 countries—poised to accelerate the country’s ascent as a medical tourism destination.

Special guest Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat, MD of Green Tourism Pvt. Ltd., called for comprehensive policy frameworks and international alignment to grow Pakistan’s medical tourism share, citing the surging global demand fueled by high treatment costs and specialized care. FPCCI’s Zubair Tufail backed this vision with policy insights and global case studies, reminding the audience of the sector’s potential.

In a dynamic panel discussion, experts tackled the future of medical tourism: digital transformation, trust-building, affordability, and innovation leading the way. Dr. Farhat Abbas of AKU Health Services summed it up—“Quality and empathy must be the heartbeat of Pakistani medical branding”—while Dr. Habib-Ur-Rahman of Shifa International emphasized that advances like telemedicine and robotic surgery are revolutionizing patient access nationally and abroad.

The conference closed with powerful recommendations: launch a Medical Tourism Council via public-private partnerships, set up international healthcare accreditation for foreign patients, and create wellness zones focusing on rehab and organic therapies.

With this visionary conference, Pakistan is carving its name onto the global medical tourism map—a giant step towards a healthier, more connected future.
