KMC Establishes Water Tanks to Maximize Rainwater Utilization

By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: In a significant move towards sustainable urban water management and flood prevention, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has commenced the establishment of several water tanks at key locations throughout the city. This initiative stems from a high-level meeting held last month by the KMC Engineering Department, chaired by Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab.

The project aims to effectively channel rainwater, prevent accumulation on main roads, and mitigate the risk of urban flooding. The first phase involves the construction of water tanks at strategically chosen sites, including the KMC Head Office, Polo Ground, the area adjacent to the Sindh Secretariat, and Burns Garden.

KMC Spokesperson Daniyal Siyal announced that construction teams have already begun work on these sites, with completion anticipated shortly. “The primary objective is to ensure efficient utilization of rainwater, preventing it from stagnating on streets or damaging public infrastructure,” he stated. Siyal also mentioned that the KMC is actively seeking additional locations citywide to expand the initiative. “There are numerous sustainable options for managing rainwater, including urban gardening, rainwater harvesting, and other non-potable uses. This strategy not only fosters environmental stewardship but also enhances Karachi’s resilience to seasonal rains.”
This initiative aligns with Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s broader vision to modernize civic infrastructure, promote environmental sustainability, and improve the quality of life for Karachi’s residents.
