Karachi: In a poignant reflection on a pivotal historical event, Dr. Sham Sundar Advani, a prominent leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA), has labeled July 5 as the darkest day in the political history of Pakistan. The date marks the anniversary of the military coup that overthrew the country’s democratically elected Prime Minister, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in 1977.
In a strongly worded statement issued on this significant occasion, Dr. Advani condemned the actions of General Zia-ul-Haq, who led the coup and imposed martial law, thus infringing upon the sanctity of the Constitution and undermining democratic governance. “On this day, our beloved leader was not only removed from power but was unjustly imprisoned and ultimately executed, which plunged Pakistan into a prolonged era of darkness,” Dr. Advani asserted.
Revering Bhutto's legacy, Dr. Advani noted that leaders of his stature are rare, emerging only once in centuries. He emphasized that while Bhutto continues to be cherished in the hearts of the people, the figure of General Zia-ul-Haq has faded into obscurity. “Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto will forever remain alive in the hearts of our nation,” he added.
In a tribute to their founding leader, the Pakistan People’s Party announced plans to commemorate Bhutto’s contributions to the nation, particularly his pivotal role in making Pakistan a nuclear power. The party will hold candlelight vigils and remembrance events to honor his memory and legacy, reaffirming their commitment to the democratic ideals he championed.
