HBL Microfinance Bank and SUPARCO Launch Pakistan’s First Satellite-Powered Agri-Lending Solution

By: Aziz Khatri

Islamabad: In a groundbreaking move for Pakistan’s agricultural finance sector, HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce satellite-based analytics into agricultural lending.

This collaboration is the first of its kind in Pakistan, combining space technology with microfinance to revolutionize crop financing. A pilot project will be launched in Okara District, Punjab, where high-resolution satellite imagery will be used for pre-loan assessments, including crop health, yield estimates, risk profiling, and credit scoring, making loan approval faster and more accurate without needing manual field visits.

Mr. Amir Khan, President & CEO of HBL MfB, expressed excitement over this innovation, stating it aligns perfectly with their vision to provide smarter, data-driven financial services to farmers. He emphasized that satellite technology will empower microfinance to better support Pakistan's agricultural communities.

SUPARCO’s Member (SAR), Mr. Zafar Iqbal, highlighted the importance of this partnership in applying national space capabilities to real-world economic development, ensuring more precise risk management and boosting agricultural productivity.

Furthermore, the agreement includes plans for post-loan satellite monitoring to track crop growth and provide early warning alerts for any anomalies, paving the way for enhanced transparency and risk reduction in farm lending.

This initiative sets a new benchmark for agri-financing in Pakistan and positions HBL MfB and SUPARCO as pioneers in combining space technology with financial innovation.
