By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi, Aug 14: On the occasion of Independence Day, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab visited the mausoleum of the Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, where he laid a floral wreath on behalf of the citizens and offered prayers. He also recorded his thoughts in the visitors’ book.

Speaking to the media on the occasion, Mayor Wahab said, “As per tradition, I have come to Mazar-e-Quaid on this 14th of August 2025 to pay tribute to the Founder of the Nation. Due to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s unmatched leadership and tireless efforts, we were blessed with a free and sovereign state — the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Today is a day to renew our commitment to the very ideology upon which this country was founded, and to honor the sacrifices and struggles of Pakistan's founders.”

He said that in recent days, Pakistan has faced Indian aggression, but the country gave a clear and firm response, sending a strong message to the enemy. “Pakistan is a peace-loving nation, but if any country or group looks at us with ill intentions, the entire nation will give a forceful response. We are proud of our armed forces who have always defended our motherland and thwarted enemy designs at every front.”

Mayor Wahab said the day is not only about celebrating freedom, but also about recommitting ourselves to loyalty and remembering the sacrifices made for our independence. He stressed that all Pakistanis must continue to play their role in safeguarding the country and putting it firmly on the path of progress and prosperity.

He added, “This August 14th holds special significance for us, as Independence Day celebrations have been ongoing across the country for the past 13 days. People participated with enthusiasm, and chants of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ echoed in every city, town, and village — especially in Sindh, where the public showed great national unity.”

He highlighted the main Independence Day event held at the National Stadium in Karachi, which was attended by thousands. “This grand celebration proved that the people of Pakistan are not afraid of any challenge. I pray that we can show the world that we are a determined nation and not afraid of external pressures or conspiracies.”

Referring to a recent project, he said Chairman Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has gifted the people of Karachi an additional water supply project through a new canal from Hub Dam. “We have shown who works and who only talks. Our only priority is to serve the people, and these projects are providing direct relief. This is just the beginning — we will continue to work for the development and prosperity of Karachi and all of Pakistan.” Mayor Wahab stated that today’s Karachi is the city we all hoped for. “The era of body bags and violence is over. Now, this city is moving towards development, light, and peace.”

He criticized misinformation regarding the Hub Canal, stating, “Some are spreading baseless propaganda that the canal has washed away, whereas the reality is that the new canal has already been inaugurated by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and repair work on the old canal is underway.”  He added, “You all know that the K-IV project has been inaugurated five times, but it’s still not complete.”

He also addressed political opponents, saying, “Our friends in MQM should certainly celebrate Independence Day, but they must also focus on work. People want results, not disappointment. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Mustafa Kamal are part of the federal cabinet — they bear responsibility to actively solve Karachi’s issues.”

“I said yesterday that the so-called ‘Shehbaz Speed’ is no longer there — the people now demand performance, not promises. Under the leadership of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, we will replace the culture of gutka (chewing tobacco) with pens — meaning knowledge, progress, and literacy.”

He concluded by saying, “The era of negative politics is over. Now, only performance will find approval in the court of the public.”
