Mayor of Karachi Demands Urgent Action on BRT Projects and Infrastructure Rehabilitation

By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: The Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has raised critical concerns regarding the ongoing delays in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects and the persistent issues stemming from inadequate infrastructure management. In an official statement today, he called on the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) to provide a definitive timeline for the completion of these essential projects and to immediately address the rehabilitation of infrastructure that has suffered during construction.

Highlighting the detrimental impact of mismanagement, the Mayor noted that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has been unfairly burdened with criticism as a result of these delays. Drawing attention to past experiences at Nagan Chowrangi and KDA Chowrangi, he criticized the flawed planning and lack of coordination that have caused prolonged disruptions for residents.

“Citizens are still facing hardships due to the ongoing issues at University Road linked to the Red Line project. PIDCL is responsible for tearing down crucial infrastructure without taking the necessary steps to restore it. It is essential that roads, footpaths, and other vital facilities are returned to their original state to relieve the people of Karachi,” Mayor stated.

He further articulated concerns about the completion timeline of the project, which received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in 2017 but remains unfinished. “At this current rate, there is a real possibility that these projects will not be completed by 2035. This is unacceptable for a city like Karachi, which relies on effective infrastructure for millions of its residents,” he emphasized.

Mayor strongly advocated for the inclusion of local leadership in all phases of construction and development. He argued that such involvement is crucial to ensure transparency, efficacy, and sustainable progress. “Ignoring local authorities risks repeating past mistakes, leading to further infrastructure decline and increased suffering for the public,” he remarked.

The Mayor reaffirmed the KMC's commitment to protecting the interests of Karachi's citizens, ensuring that development projects do not compromise the city's infrastructure or public convenience. The ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts to secure a better future for Karachi's transportation and urban landscape.
