Karachi: A major milestone was achieved by South Zone Police under the Safe City Project as they successfully arrested a long-wanted fugitive using advanced Facial Recognition (F.R) cameras for the first time in the area. This innovative technology significantly boosts the police’s ability to identify and catch criminals quickly.
On October 20, 2025, the F.R. system installed in ERV SP-0853 near Data Corner detected a motorcycle rider matching the biometric profile of Abdul Azeem, a suspect wanted in six criminal cases. Upon receiving the automated alert, police promptly intercepted the individual, cross-checked his National Identity Card, and confirmed his identity.
DIG South Asad Raza praised this operation as a key step forward in leveraging artificial intelligence to strengthen law enforcement. “This successful arrest highlights our commitment to adopting modern technologies to enhance security and make Karachi safer for all citizens,” he said.
Abdul Azeem is now in police custody, and formal legal proceedings have begun against him. The use of facial recognition technology helps reduce human error and speeds up suspect identification, especially for repeat offenders.
The Safe City Project aims to equip Karachi’s police force with state-of-the-art tools including CCTV networks, smart tracking systems, and real-time data analytics. This case sets a precedent for future operations using AI-driven surveillance to combat crime.
Critics, however, often raise concerns about privacy and the potential misuse of facial recognition. Authorities ensure strict protocols to balance security needs with citizens’ rights.
This milestone showcases how technology can be a force multiplier for law enforcement in growing megacities like Karachi, promising smarter and safer urban living.
