Karachi: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab represented Pakistan at the International Mayors Forum 2025 held in Toyota City, Japan, where leaders from various cities convened to discuss pressing climate change issues, sustainable development, and innovative urban planning strategies.
During the forum, Mayor Wahab highlighted the proactive initiatives undertaken by Pakistan, particularly by the Sindh Government, to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. Global leaders underscored the importance of climate resilience, the development of green infrastructure, and efficient energy resource management in urban planning.
In his address, Mayor Wahab outlined the comprehensive strategy implemented in collaboration with the Sindh Government to mitigate the impacts of climate change and achieve sustainable development goals. He pointed out that these efforts are already yielding positive outcomes.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s global engagement, he stated, “Our active participation on international platforms demonstrates our commitment to addressing climate-related challenges seriously.” He also mentioned the ambitious project launched by the Sindh Government following the catastrophic floods of 2022, aimed at building 2.1 million Climate Resilient Homes, with 1.2 million already completed.
“The construction of homes for flood victims represents more than mere rehabilitation; it is a commitment to ensuring a sustainable and secure future,” emphasized Mayor Wahab. He stressed that Sindh is tackling climate challenges through modern policies, effective planning, and tangible actions.
Further reinforcing Pakistan’s dedication to climate discussions, Mayor Wahab asserted that the country is advocating for global collaboration to combat climate change. “We are striving not only to secure a safe future for our citizens but also to bolster international efforts for environmental protection in partnership with the global community,” he stated.
In conclusion, the Mayor expressed optimism that through international cooperation, technology transfer, and strategic partnerships, the negative impacts of climate change could be mitigated, providing the groundwork for true sustainable development.
