Karachi: The “World Culture Festival 2025” at the Arts Council of Pakistan marked a new milestone in cultural celebration, featuring an array of events on its 24th day that captivated audiences with vibrant theatre plays, dance workshops, and music performances.

The festival, now a prominent fixture in Karachi’s cultural landscape, showcased two notable theatre plays — “Suitcase” and “Adrenaline” — presented by the globally diverse 7 Spices Theatre Group, comprised of artists from Syria and Canada. Written by Ahmad Meree and directed by Majdi Bou-Matar, “Suitcase” is a dark comedy that intertwines tragic storytelling with humor, portraying the lives of two characters, Razan and Samer, entrapped in a moment of uncertainty. On the other hand, “Adrenaline” tells the poignant tale of Jaber, a young Syrian celebrating his first New Year’s Eve in Canada after a life overshadowed by conflict.

The festival also featured a workshop led by renowned dancer Nighat Chaudhry, where national and international artists gathered to learn the intricate basics of Kathak dance. Participants were guided through the art of “Lehra,” emphasizing the balance between slow and rapid movement in their performances.

Among the highlights of the day was a film screening titled “South Africa & Pan-African Shorts,” which showcased six films from various African nations. Notable films included “Miscellaneous” from South Africa, directed by Johannes Christopher Du Bruyn, and “Hurdles of Hope” from Uganda, directed by Elly E Debuni.

Adding to this celebratory atmosphere was Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who visited the Arts Council with his children. During his visit, he admired the mural “Karachi Blooms,” created by French artist Chifumi. Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of cultural development in Karachi, stating, “We are doing ‘Karachi Blooms’ instead of ‘boom boom,’” reflecting on the city’s evolving artistic landscape.

The day concluded with a rousing performance of “Rhythms of the World,” where American cellist Erica Wise and violist Rizwan Jagani entranced attendees with their melodies. Fans also enjoyed a unique collaboration between Danish musicians and artists from Hunza, celebrating a rich cultural exchange. The evening was capped off with an energetic musical dance performance by the PNCA and In C Dance Group, leaving the audience in high spirits.

The “World Culture Festival 2025” continues to highlight the rich diversity of cultures, fostering appreciation and understanding through art and performance in Karachi.
