Karachi: In a bid to enhance tourism ties, Sri Lanka recently held a significant B2B roadshow and networking evening, attracting the attention of the Pakistani travel industry. The event underscored the potential for collaboration and aimed to invigorate tourism relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.

Organized by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Overseas Employment and Tourism, and the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Karachi, the event featured representatives from leading Sri Lankan destination management companies. They engaged with a large number of Pakistani travel trade representatives to discuss opportunities in tourism, business, group tours, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions).

With over 20,000 Pakistanis visiting Sri Lanka in 2025, the event sought to promote the island nation as a safe, year-round, fully open tourist destination. The offerings cater to a diverse range of travelers, from leisure seekers to those interested in cultural, natural attractions, and adventure activities.

To facilitate travel, Sri Lankan Airlines operates eight direct flights weekly to Pakistan, with four flights each from Karachi and Lahore. The recent improvement in visa facilities and the resumption of international travel have also contributed to the growing interest among Pakistani travelers.

Highlighting the cultural aspect of the event was a traditional Sri Lankan dance performance, which showcased the rich heritage of the country. A special briefing for the media provided insights into evolving tourism trends and new developments in the Sri Lankan tourism sector.

Sanjeeva Pattila, the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Karachi, emphasized the long-standing historical, cultural, and friendly relations between the two nations. He invited Pakistanis to explore Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, coastal areas, forests, historical sites, and warm hospitality. Notably, Pattila also extended gratitude to Pakistan for its humanitarian assistance following Cyclone Dittwa in November 2025.

Dhirahatiya Rachchi, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, remarked that Pakistan is a pivotal market for Sri Lanka, with tourists visiting for both leisure and business. He highlighted the special support Sri Lanka offers in the MICE tourism sector, encouraging Pakistani business groups to leverage these opportunities.

Ruwan Wijekun, the Pakistan Manager for Sri Lankan Airlines, reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to enhancing air connectivity between the two nations, promising convenient travel options through special fares and services.

The roadshow in Karachi marks a significant step towards fortifying tourism, trade, and people-to-people connections, paving the way for new avenues of bilateral cooperation in the future. With Pakistan emerging as a proactive outbound market, the potential for a thriving tourism exchange between the two countries is clearer than ever.
