By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: The 39-day “World Culture Festival 2025,” organized by the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, came to a vibrant close with a star-studded ceremony that showcased the richness of global cultures. Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, was the chief guest at the event, which drew an impressive crowd of artists, diplomats, and citizens.*

The ceremony began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem, setting a solemn yet celebratory tone. President of the Arts Council, Muhammad Ahmed Shah, delivered a warm welcome to all esteemed guests, which included provincial ministers, international envoys, and representatives from various cultural institutions.

In his address, Chief Minister Shah expressed gratitude to the Arts Council's leadership and all participating artists for their contributions to the festival. “This event not only highlights the vibrant culture of Karachi but also positions our city as the cultural capital of Pakistan,” he stated. He emphasized that the festival's themes—peace and environment—served as vital messages during a time of global conflict, particularly addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza through the lens of art.

Over 1,000 artists from 142 countries graced the festival, a testament to the collaborative spirit of cultures coming together. CM Shah noted, "Art is a universal language that transcends borders, and here in Karachi, we are committed to sending a message of peace and tolerance." He further praised the hard work of Ahmed Shah, calling him a heroic figure for his dedication to the arts.

President Ahmed Shah echoed these sentiments, celebrating the festival's growth from 44 countries last year to a broader international participation this year. He thanked the Sindh government and security agencies for their unwavering support, highlighting that more than 80% of the international artists attended at their own expense. “Our team and volunteers have worked tirelessly to make this event a success, and next year we aim to host an even larger festival,” he promised.

The ceremony featured a symbolic exchange of gifts, as the Ambassador of Palestine, Dr. Zuhair Muhammad Hamadallah Zaid, presented a Palestinian scarf to CM Shah and President Shah. In return, traditional Sindhi Ajrak and shields were gifted to the Palestinian Ambassador and other international artists by the Chief Minister.

The final day was not just a celebration of cultural diversity but also included a dance workshop led by renowned Cameroonian artist Jay C Val alongside performances such as the Egyptian theatre play “When,” directed by Eiad Elsiedy.

As the festival closed its curtains, the spirit of unity through culture was palpably felt, marking a hopeful step toward peace and understanding in tumultuous times. The World Culture Festival 2025 not only brought together diverse cultures but also ignited conversations about pressing global issues, leaving attendees inspired and eager for what the future holds.
