Mohatta Palace Brings World-Class Scholars to Karachi for History Lecture Series

 By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: The Mohatta Palace Museum has launched an international lecture series featuring some of the world’s most distinguished scholars, reinforcing its role as a centre for intellectual exchange and public engagement with history and heritage.

The series brings together leading experts whose work spans ancient civilisations, medieval Islamic societies, and the classical world. The programme features renowned Egyptologist Dr. Salima Ikram, historian of the medieval Islamic world Dr. Eduardo Manzano Moreno, and eminent classical historian Dr. Robin Lane Fox. Each lecture explores major historical themes including civilisation, empire, memory, and the evolving interpretation of the past.

Hosted at the historic Mohatta Palace, the initiative aims to make high-level academic discourse accessible to a wider audience, including students, researchers, and members of the public interested in history and the humanities. The museum described the series as part of its ongoing effort to connect local heritage with global historical narratives.

Curator Sumera Naveed said Mohatta Palace is not merely a historic structure but a space where scholarship and public dialogue intersect. She noted that the invited scholars represent diverse methodological approaches — archaeological, historical, and classical — while sharing a commitment to examining how historical narratives are constructed and understood.

Managing Trustee Hameed Haroon said bringing together scholars of international standing strengthens Mohatta Palace Museum’s role as a centre for learning and cultural exchange. He added that the lecture series reflects the institution’s commitment to making serious scholarship accessible to the public without compromising academic rigour.

The speakers bring decades of research and global recognition. Dr. Salima Ikram, Professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, is internationally known for her work on ancient Egyptian archaeology and mortuary practices. Dr. Eduardo Manzano Moreno is widely recognised for his scholarship on al-Andalus and early Islamic societies, while Dr. Robin Lane Fox is among the foremost historians of the classical world, particularly for his work on Alexander the Great and ancient Greece.

By encouraging critical reflection on sources, memory, and interpretation, the lecture series presents history as an evolving conversation shaped by evidence, context, and perspective — a theme that resonates strongly with the layered cultural history of Sindh and South Asia.

The programme continues Mohatta Palace Museum’s tradition of presenting research-driven cultural initiatives that bridge local heritage and global scholarship.
