Global Diplomats Gather for Intercultural Iftar in Karachi

 By: Aziz Khatri

KARACHI: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Liaison Office hosted a prestigious Interfaith and Intercultural Diplomatic Iftar Dinner at the State Guest House Karachi, bringing together diplomats, religious scholars, business leaders, journalists, and members of civil society.

The gathering highlighted the spiritual message of Ramadan while promoting interfaith harmony, cultural dialogue, and Pakistan’s balanced and responsible role in global affairs.

The participation of Sami Abdullah Salim Al Khanjari, Consul General of the Sultanate of Oman and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, was warmly welcomed, reflecting the longstanding and brotherly relations between the two countries.

Addressing the gathering, Muhammad Irfan Soomro, Director General of the Foreign Liaison Office Karachi, said the world today faces uncertainty, regional conflicts, extremism, and widening social divisions. He emphasized that meaningful dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect remain essential for sustainable peace.

He noted that the presence of representatives from diverse faiths and cultures at one table sends a powerful message that cooperation and peaceful coexistence are possible despite differences.

Referring to the historic address of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on August 11, 1947, he said the country was founded on principles of religious freedom, equality, and state neutrality — values that continue to guide its policies.

He also highlighted that the land of Sindh reflects the teachings of Sufi saints, especially Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, whose universal message of humanity and compassion remains relevant today.

Speakers described Ramadan as a time of patience, sacrifice, and social responsibility — values that promote balance and justice in international relations.

During the Iftar, participants discussed bilateral relations, trade and investment opportunities, cultural exchange, and the constructive role of media in presenting a peaceful and moderate global image of Pakistan. The presence of the journalist community was regarded as vital in promoting a positive international narrative.

On the occasion, renowned artist Hameed Soomro presented one of his paintings to the Director General, symbolizing cultural expression and harmony.

Diplomatic circles observed that such gatherings help bridge gaps among civilizations and reinforce Karachi’s global significance as a hub of international engagement.

The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to peace, tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect — values embodied by Ramadan and essential for global stability and shared prosperity.

Among others present were Deputy Director General Sadia Gohar Khanum and senior officials of the Foreign Liaison Office.
