KARACHI: Chairman of RK Sports Management Atif Iqbal, President Rais Khan, and Vice Chairperson Irum Fawad have termed Iran’s announcement to boycott the FIFA World Cup 2026 a major loss for international football and urged the global football body to ensure that all qualified teams are able to participate in the mega tournament.
Reacting to the development, the officials said that the national team of Iran is regarded as one of the strongest teams in Asian football and has participated in several previous World Cup tournaments with impressive performances in the qualifying rounds.
They noted that Iran’s Minister for Sports, Ahmad Donyamali, had raised concerns that the safety of players could not be guaranteed under war-like conditions, making it difficult for the team to prepare for or participate in the tournament.
The officials emphasized that Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, should play an active role in addressing the issue and ensuring the safety and security of the Iranian team so that it can take part in the upcoming World Cup.
They further stated that sports should remain separate from politics, as games promote peace, friendship, and unity among nations. According to them, the presence of the Iranian football team in the United States during the World Cup could even help reduce tensions and encourage positive engagement between countries.
Atif Iqbal, Rais Khan, and Irum Fawad also urged Iran to reconsider its decision, noting that millions of football fans around the world would be disappointed if the team does not participate in the prestigious global tournament.
