Karachi: Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab on Monday laid the foundation stone for the construction and rehabilitation of Mirza Adam Khan Road in Lyari Town, a major development project worth Rs400 million aimed at improving infrastructure and easing traffic flow in District South.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, MPA Yousuf Baloch, party leaders, elected representatives, and officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
Addressing the gathering, the mayor said the project includes both road construction and a modern drainage system. Under Package-03, work has formally begun on a 4.48-kilometer-long dual carriageway, along with a 4.61-kilometer drainage line to ensure effective rainwater disposal. He added that the 26-foot-wide road would significantly improve traffic flow, while additional sewerage infrastructure would help reduce long-standing sanitation issues.
He termed the rehabilitation of the road from Garden to Mirza Por Road a major development initiative, noting that the artery connects key areas including Mauripur Road and serves as an alternative route during traffic congestion in the Old City Area and surrounding localities.
Mayor Wahab said the project fulfills a long-standing demand of residents of Lyari and Saddar Town, emphasizing that development of underprivileged areas remains a top priority. He assured that no compromise would be made on quality and transparency.
Referring to broader initiatives, he said the Lyari Transformation Project has been launched under the directives of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, with an estimated cost of Rs5 billion in its first phase. He added that work on the K-III water supply line is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed before June 30.
The mayor also highlighted ongoing efforts to restore Spencer Eye Hospital, where OPD services are expected to begin in April, offering free treatment and surgeries. Additionally, plans are underway to upgrade Lea Market and establish a new food street in the area.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Pakistan Peoples Party leadership, including Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, to continue public service and address Karachi’s challenges.
Concluding his address, the mayor said that development work in Karachi is gaining pace despite challenges, stressing that strong institutions, transparency, and the rule of law are essential for sustainable progress.
