SHRC Participates in “Talk the Hope” Dialogue on Suicide Prevention

By: Aziz Khatri

KARACHI: The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) participated in the Leadership Dialogue titled “Talk the Hope,” organised by Sindh Integrated Emergency & Health Services (SIEHS), aimed at strengthening suicide prevention response mechanisms across Sindh.

The forum brought together key stakeholders for policy-level discussions focused on enhanced institutional coordination and the integration of mental health support within emergency and telehealth systems, including Tele-Tabeeb 1123.

SHRC appreciated SIEHS for initiating the dialogue and emphasised that suicide prevention must be addressed not only as a medical emergency but also as a human rights obligation of the State. The Commission underscored that the rights to life, dignity, and access to healthcare are fundamental, and mental health protection forms an integral part of the broader human rights framework.

It was highlighted that individuals at risk often face social stigma, discrimination, economic hardship, domestic violence, and inadequate support systems, requiring a coordinated institutional response.

During the session, participants stressed that ambulance services and emergency call centres should incorporate trained responders in psychological first aid, confidential crisis-handling protocols, and immediate referral pathways. Telehealth platforms such as Tele-Tabeeb were noted as vital tools in providing 24/7 remote consultations, confidential support for individuals hesitant to seek in-person care, and bridging service gaps in rural and underserved districts.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Rajveer Singh Sodha, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Sindh on Human Rights. It was hosted by Brigadier Tarique Quadir Lakhiar (R) – SI (M), Chief Executive Officer of SIEHS, along with Muhammad Qasim Soomro, former Member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh.

Participants described the dialogue as a meaningful step toward translating concern into coordinated institutional action and strengthening collective efforts to safeguard mental well-being and protect the right to life across the province.
