By: Aziz Khatri

Karachi: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi organized a prestigious literary event titled “In Memory of Munir Niazi” at Haseena Moin Hall, paying homage to the enduring legacy of renowned poet Munir Niazi.

The ceremony was presided over by eminent poetess Zehra Nigah, while Muhammad Ahmed Shah, President of the Arts Council, along with noted journalist and writer Anwar Sen Roy, Fazal Jamil, and Kashif Raza, spoke in detail about the literary contributions of the celebrated poet. The event was moderated by Dr Ambreen Haseeb Amber and attended by a large number of literary and social figures.

In her presidential address, Zehra Nigah described Munir Niazi as one of the most significant voices in Urdu literature. She highlighted the distinctive elements in his poetry, noting that recurring themes such as wind, evening, and mortality create a unique atmosphere and depth. She observed that natural elements in his work—such as sky, trees, and birds—serve not merely as symbols but as companions, adding layers of meaning and emotional resonance.

She further remarked that Munir Niazi possessed a rare ability to create vivid imagery through simple language, blending freshness of thought with clarity of expression. His poetry, she added, maintained a unique style throughout his career, reflecting both classical traditions and cultural depth.

Speaking on the occasion, Muhammad Ahmed Shah praised Zehra Nigah as a towering literary figure and appreciated the speakers for their insightful reflections. He also announced that the Arts Council would continue organizing monthly events to honor prominent literary personalities.

Anwar Sen Roy noted that, in Munir Niazi’s view, poetry is not merely a collection of words but a profound expression of inner emotions. He emphasized that Niazi believed poetry comes to those with sincerity and depth, often drawing upon imagery from nature such as mountains, deserts, and forests.

Fazal Jamil described Munir Niazi as a sensitive and unique personality whose poetic expression carried an element of mystery and simplicity. Kashif Raza added that Niazi’s work resembles a painter’s canvas, where each word functions like a brushstroke, creating vivid and lasting impressions on the reader.

The ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of the Arts Council’s commitment to preserving and promoting Pakistan’s rich literary heritage through such meaningful engagements.
