Literary Tribute Held in Memory of Journalist Afzal Sherwani in Karachi

 Karachi: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi organized a literary tribute at Haseena Moin Hall to mark the 100th birth anniversary of renowned journalist and critic Afzal Sherwani.

The ceremony was presided over by Shaista Zaidi, while prominent speakers including Ghazi Salahuddin, Fatima Hasan, Tauseef Ahmed Khan, Nazir Mahmood, Shahab Karamat, Waris, and Muhammad Ali Siddiqui shared their reflections on Sherwani’s life and contributions.

Video messages were presented by Shamim Khan and Sherwani’s daughter Anita Afzal. The session was moderated by his son Imran Sherwani, and was attended by a large number of literary and social personalities. A cake-cutting ceremony was also held to mark the centenary occasion.

In her presidential address, Shaista Zaidi emphasized the importance of meaningful dialogue, stating that true civilization is rooted in the principles of speaking, listening, and tolerance. She noted that intellectual discourse requires depth of thought and reflection.

Ghazi Salahuddin described Afzal Sherwani as a distinguished Urdu debater and an active participant in literary gatherings, recalling his passion for reading, writing, and engaging in serious intellectual discussions. He added that Sherwani remained steadfast in his ideological commitments despite facing challenges throughout his life.

Tauseef Ahmed Khan highlighted Sherwani’s role in promoting progressive thought and his significant contributions to literary and intellectual development. Anita Afzal paid an emotional tribute, describing her father as a multifaceted personality who encouraged and guided young writers, dedicating his life to literature and intellectual pursuits.

Poet Fatima Hasan remembered him as a sincere and humble individual who upheld truth and integrity in his writings. Nazir Mahmood noted Sherwani’s deep analytical insight and his command over both Urdu and English, stressing the need to preserve his writings for future generations.

Shamim Khan described him as not only a journalist but also a thinker and poet who combined knowledge, creativity, and artistic expression. Waris highlighted his ability to inspire and energize literary gatherings, while Shahab Karamat credited him with imparting valuable lessons in language, literature, and the ethics of writing.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Afzal Sherwani’s wife, who expressed gratitude to all participants for honoring his memory. The event served as a fitting tribute to a remarkable literary figure whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
